About the spot

This entry is at the seaward end of Lagoa de Óbidos near Foz do Arelho. Shallow-looking water behind sandbanks is not a uniformly safe standing-depth area: the entrance shifts and incoming or outgoing water can flow strongly. Atlantic surf lies outside.

Local schools distinguish the entrance from the teaching spot farther inside. The opposite shore at Bom Sucesso can offer more launch space, depending on the sand. Beginners are better served by supervised lessons in a suitable inner area; independent sessions near the entrance require local knowledge.
