About the spot

Ria de Alvor is a tidal flat-water area with established kite-school activity. Sandbanks and shallows alternate with deeper channels; current can increase markedly on larger tides. The inner ria is distinct from the exposed Meia Praia beach.

Summer northerly to northwesterly winds are used, but can arrive gusty over land. Lessons need a suitable water-level window rather than any tide. Independent riders must avoid navigation channels, other water users and sensitive shores. Neither standing depth everywhere nor unrestricted access throughout the ria is guaranteed.
